The smelter of St Hema - Nomenj

The remains of a former smelter for processing iron ore stand below the Jelovica Plateau opposite the village of Nomenj.

It was built in the 17th century at a location suitable for the delivery of ore and charcoal along the Plavžarica stream.

The remains of the foundations of the work buildings and bunkhouses for the workers are still visible around it.


ACCESS:
You can access Saint Hemma and Grmečica Waterfall through the railway underpass right behind the railway station, direction Bled. Continue on the walking road to the new bridge and turn right to get to Grmečica Waterfall, or left to get to Saint Hemma. The walk takes about 30 minutes.
