Zdole, the centre of a local administrative community with around 800 inhabitants, lies in the Posavje Hills to the east of Krško. Even the southern part of the community lies at over 250 metres above sea level, while its northern edge rises above 300 metres. Like other communities, Zdole has seen a modernisation of agricultural holdings and increased employment of its inhabitants in non-agricultural jobs in nearby Krško. As a settlement, Zdole is first mentioned in the 13th century as a possession of the Diocese of Salzburg. Even after 1848 the entire area fell into the province of Styria and the Brežice district. After 1936 it was briefly an independent municipality. Zdole has two major irrigation systems – in Anovec and Ravne – which contributes to the intensive organic production of vegetables and berry fruits. Zdole itself has beautiful and unspoilt natural surroundings, plenty of vineyards and orchards, and a rich rural architectural heritage. The famous chef Ivan Ivačič was born in Ravne and later created culinary masterpieces there. Two well-known media personalities also have their roots here: the singer Simona Vodopivec and the radio presenter and comic Sašo Hribar. Sights of interest in Zdole include a permanent exhibition of wooden sculptures by local artist Jože Kramžar. A European Long-Distance Path runs through Zdole, giving us the chance to meet walkers from all over the world when they stop here for refreshments. We also have hiking trails that lead to Zdole from every direction. These trails run through the hidden places of unspoilt nature, through forests where wild mushrooms grow, through beautiful clearings and over hills, and among apple orchards and other fruit plantations. Everyone who visits us goes away laden with the gifts of nature, perhaps after enjoying a glass or two of the local wine, and the desire to return to this idyllic spot just a few kilometres away from the urban centre of Krško. The church of St George in Zdole is an essentially baroque building built in around 1700. It was given its present neo-Romanesque appearance in the 19th century. It has been a parish church since 1789. Together with some of the older farmhouses and the Beno Zupančič House, the church represents the nucleus of this idyllic little village on a hill in the middle of a gently undulating plateau. St George ("Jurij" in Slovene) also gives his name to the traditional "Jurjevanje" event, including the increasingly famous breakfast omelette that is offered free of charge to the many guests attending the event. The church of St Vitus in Kostanjek is a modest building that is probably medieval in origin. It was remodelled in 1953. The high altar bears the date 1878.
