Virštanj is made up of small viniferous hills, which was first mentioned in the 13th century. The area was named after the four stones, which acted as boundary stones to the lords of this viniferous land. In German, the settlement is called “veir Stein” (four stones). The center of the town boasts the Banovina knight and wine cellar, which continues to cultivate a 120 year old grape vine. Thus the town plays a central role in the viticulture of the area, confirming its value and that of the celebrated Virštanj wine. The area is tightly connected to the tradition of wine-making, thus producing the aforementioned Virštanj wine and also boasting the Šmarsako-Virštanj tourist wine road VTC – 10.

The church of Saint Philip and Saint Jacob stands on a small hill in Sela. First mentioned in 1545, the basic elements of the building are Gothic in origin. The preserved frescos from this era can still be found in fragments in the interior of the church. Newer frescos, dated back to 1862, were the work of Tomaž Fanton. In 1826, the church’s belfry and presbytery were completed and later, the vestry, at the end of the 19th century. The church is typically Gothic, but was remodeled in the baroque style to be a rural subsidiary.
