Popetre is a clustered village on the bridge of Pičenca above the Dragonja Valley in the east.
Nearby towns are Beli Kamen (Pietra bianca), where a large white monolith (large block of stone) with a carved inscription from the 1st century used to stand, and Poletiči, a scattered hamlet above the Dragonja headwaters. The village is of old origin and is mentioned in written sources as early as 1028 when the German Empe-ror Conrad II. the Salian enfe-offed it to the Patriarchs of Aquileia. From the mid 13th century, the village belonged to Philip from Kožljak, Andrea de Ciriago and his descendants, then to the Bembo noble family from Koper from 1505 to 1602 and followed by the Moratto family. During the October offensive in 1943, the Germans burnt down part of the village. Among its main features is the old »Pr Brnardća« homestead with its wooden balcony con-necting the rooms on the first floor.
