Tourist farms

Info Ecological tourist farmsTourist farms with accommodation

Get a real taste of country living when you wake on your tourist farm to the sound to cowbells and birdsong, and the smell of fresh-baked bread. On a tourist farm you can find little nooks of peace and relaxation, and you can meet warm-hearted people, and learn about their customs and livestock. There are more than 400 tourist farms where you can stay. A real attraction are the ecological tourist farms, which offer a healthy living environment and certified organic food.

A host of tips

Holidaying on a farm is a wonderful opportunity to get to know the rich cultural heritage of the Slovenian countryside: the architecture, the customs and the crafts. It is an opportunity to experience the joy and exuberance of rural fairs and events, and to feel the rhythm of everyday farm life and the happiness of the family when the hard work of the harvest or the traditional pig slaughter is done.

Events in the countryside are a culinary experience: the St Martin’s day festivities for example are a huge social event.

You can stay overnight at a tourist farm, then hike through the unspoilt Triglav National Park and the mountains of Slovenia. You can head for the adrenalin rush of a ride down the River Soča, or explore the limestone Karst. You can explore Štajerska and Koroška by bike, ride the River Mura by ferry, and see the forests of Dolenjska. Many tourist farms are located in wine regions, from where you can pick up one of Slovenia’s wine trails, and taste and buy some excellent local wines.

The red apple

Slovenian farms are rated for their facilities and their services using the red apple symbol. Tourist farms are given a rating of one to four red apples: one for basic, and four for the very best facilities with excellent services.

New classification of tourist farms

To ensure even greater transparency all tourist farms with accommodation had to undergo a new classification in 2009. The farm operators themselves rated their accommodation in line with strict rules, while the four-apple farms were also rated by qualified inspectors.
