Pogačarjev trg 1000 Ljubljana
If you would like to experience the buzz of the real city, the Central Market is certainly the right place to do so. It is located in the city centre, in the immediate vicinity of the Tripple Bridge, so you simply cannot miss it while walking around the historic city centre or along the banks of the Ljubljanica river.
The Market was designed by the famous architect Jože Plečnik as a series of covered two-storied markets, following the curve of the river. Today, the Market encompasses the open-air market on Vodnik and Pogačar squares, the covered market between the squares and the Plečnik’s covered markets along the Ljubljanica river.
The Market offers local and Slovenian fruit and vegetables as well as a variety of tropical fruits, cured-meat products, bread baked in firewood ovens, locally produced cheeses, pumpkin seed oil, olive oil and other Slovenian delicacies. Besides fruit, vegetables, herbs and spices, you can buy almost all kinds of food, including Slovenian specialities, such as dry-cured ham or potica.
Pogačar Square hosts the organic market every Wednesday. There, you can buy organic food from Slovenian farms.
The Market is also a scenic venue for various culinary events, from presentations of regions and wines to the well-known traditional “Open Kitchen” (Odprta kuhna) which is open during the warmer months.
