The Parish Church of the Assumption is the largest church in the Municipality of Cerklje. It stands in a dominant position in the centre of the village where, according to historians, the first church used to stand as early as the 9th Century. At the beginning of the 13th Century two smaller churches: the Church of St. Thomas and the Church of St. Michael stood besides this church of the Assumption. The latter was supposedly destroyed in the earthquake of 1511, which seriously affected the town of Cerklje. The Chapel of St. Thomas was pulled down together with the old Church of the Assumption. The main altar of that church is one of the richest Late Baroque creations in Gorenjska region.
Its author is not known and the sculptures are the work of the master who followed the example of Francesco Robba. The workshop variant of the throne of the main altar is the painting of the Assumption of the Virgin by Leopold Layer. The depictions of St. Ursula and St. Notburga on the final side altars were made by Layer as well. The Way of the Cross and the painting of the Archangel Michael in the final right altar were made by the local artist Ivan Franke. The frescos on the cupolas of the presbytery and the nave were made by Matija Koželj.
