Podkraj is a remote settlement at the connection of the high karstic plateaus of Trnovo Forest, Nanos and Hrušica, which are comprised of the compact small villages of Trševje, Sreboti and Hrušica as well as solitary farms by the Col-Kalce road.
In the local community live 32 inhabitants of Bela, 437 inhabitants of Podkraj (including the settlement of Hrušica), 170 inhabitants of Višnje and 51 inhabitants of Vodice.
The inhabitants of Vodice are supposed to have given the name to Podkraj (Belowplace) as they often said: ‘Let us go below our place’. Perhaps the village has this name as it is pushed into the place below the mountains. Thus the plain in front of the village is reserved for fields and meadows. There is very little cultivable land so the people who live here are mainly involved in cattle breeding and forestry. Podkraj is also famous for dormice hunting.
Points of distinction : the centre of Podkraj stand a modern primary school renovated in the year 1987 and the Church of Saint Margaret (sveta Marjeta) with a beautiful Gothic presbytery. The chapel below the church (the chapel is supposed to have existed in 1851) has just been renovated. There the local community is planning to arrange a village centre.
