Martjanci is located east of Moravske Toplice and approximately 4 km from Murska Sobota. It is a place with a rich sacral history and a Gothic masterpiece known as St. Martin's Chruch that was built by Johannes Aquila from Radgona and painted under his auspices by skilled masters from his workshop in 1392. The presbytery is adorned by impeccably preserved frescoes. The southern part of the presbytery also features Aquila's self-portrait with an original inscription. The noted self-portrait is regarded as one of the oldest artistic self-depictions of Eastern European art. The name Martjanci is connected to St. Martin, the patron saint of the village, to whom the church with the marvellous Gothic bell tower is dedicated.
Among a number of well-preserved older statues and a tomb, the cemetery of Martjanci also features a grave statue by famous Slovenian architect Jože Plečnik. The noted statue is dedicated to the memory of an influential cleric of the village, pastor Horvat.
Martjanci are crossed by St. Martin's Route of Culture, which leads from St. Martin's birthplace of Szombathely (Hungary), through Domanjševci, Kobilje and through a large part of Slovenia, further through Italy, and all the way to Tours in France – the final resting place of Bishop St. Martin of Tours.
During the Ottoman Conquests, the Turks, who pillaged the neighbouring village of today's Moravske Toplice and partially burnt it to the ground (1587-1610), set up their camp in Martjanci.
The societies of the village organise a plethora of exciting events, such as the popular St. Martin's Hike, which is co-organised by the Martjanci Tourist Society.
A petrol station, a local pharmacy, and a medical aid facility are located in the village. The village is also the location of an active office of the Sinergija Entrepreneurial and Economic Development Agency – the best address for all who seek developmental opportunities and who are interested in joint developmental ventures with institutions and entrepreneurs from the local tourist region. With regard to sports, the local NK ČARDA football club is the pride of the village and a nationally recognised and well-respected club.
It is presumed that a local of Martjanci has authored a historically significant manuscript of religious and spiritual hymns as far back as during the 17th century. The manuscript also includes other sacred content, some of which can; in addition to the noted hymns; be found in song-and-hymn books from the Kajkavian region of Croatia. Martjanci are known as the birthplace of Josip Dravec (1912-1996), a prolific collector of the folk songs of Prekmurje and Prlekija.
