Population
beside a river; in the countryside
Gorišnica is a cloddy settlement in the area of Ptujsko polje, located at the main road Ptuj-Ormož. The elder part of the settlement lies beneath the former riverbed of the Pesnica river, now shifted to north, whereby the newer part spreads along the road south of the river.
Finds like six stone axes, bronze lances and Roman coins bear witness to population in remote ages. They are a living proof that once the Celts, the Ililyrians, then Romans and others had lived and created here. Traces of an old camp along the Roman road can be identified. In the north-eastern part traces of the Roman road Poetovio-Savaris are visible, along which there are also remains of antique buildings made of stone and brick. The Roman road Poetovio-Mursa had run on the southern edge of the settlement past the church. The church of St. Margaret (Sv. Marjeta) stands on a supposed site of a Roma Shrine, first mentioned in 1391. Knights named after Gorišnica are appearing already in 1235. Gorišnica numbers 685 residents. Its area comprises following villages: Gorišnica, Gajevci, Formin, Mala vas, Moškanjci, Muretinci, Placerovci, Prerad, Tibolci, Zamušani, Zagojiči, and Cunkovci. Agriculture and stockbreeding are the two most important economic lines in the plain part whereby in the mountainous area fruit growing, viticulture and cellarman`s trade, originating from a rich and several hundred year old tradition, are prevailing. The villages are connected with numerous roads. The railway line with two stations (in Moškanjci and Zamušani) as well as the Flying Centre in Moškanjci enable an easy acces to these towns. The picturesque cultural region is still more or less breathing freely. In order to preserve the cultural heritage different folklore events and preformances are being organized by different associations. You will certainly not regret if you visit us during grape harvest and husking for you have the chance to experience the genuine atmosphere at joyful works. The people of Gorišnica are kind and cheerful, they will always find a way to veriegate your day and gratify your anxiety. Main sights: the 300 year old Pannonian house at the Dominko farm; the church of St. Margaret ( Sv. Marjeta) and the sculpture or monument of iron sepulchral crosses made by Franc Tobias.
