Height above sea level
in the countryside
Dole appears as an extended widespread plateau-like landscape at an altitude of around 800 metres above sea level. It was and continues to be an Idrijan “border” territory. Prior to World War II, it was located close to the Italian-Yugoslav border. The road through Dole runs across the undulating landscape, which is covered by carefully cultivated meadows and fields; well kept farms estates are active also in cattle breeding.
Additional description : In ancient times a transport road ran from Idrija through Dole and then continued to Žibrše and Zaplana all the way to Vrhnika. Subjects and serfs from Logatec would caryy quicksilver on horseback from Idrija to the “port” (Ljubljanica River) at Vrhnika, whereas in the opposite direction they would transport grain and other necessities and requisites for the mining town. It was not until 1760 that the transport track was widened into a road, which enabled the transfer by team of horses. The road through Dole to Vrhnika lost its significance after 1850, when Idrija switched its transport to the nearby railway station Logatec.
