Šmarje is one of the villages on the Vipava Wine Road. The settlement placed on the south part of the Vipava Hills offers excellent conditions for the growing of vines. The Šmarje local community is comprised of several villages: Vrtovče, Šmarje and Zavino with small villages Potok, Hrastje and Jakulini. A point of interest are the narrow streets, called 'GASE', which surround the Church of the Virgin's Name as a semi-circle in the very centre of the village and the yard of old houses with characteristic arches - 'PRTONI'.
Points of distinction : The entire centre of the village has been preserved as a monument. In the small village Jakulini in Šmarje MATIJA VERTOVEC was born (28th January 1784 - 2nd September 1851), priest and a true wine expert who taught compassionate farming, winegrowing and cellarman's trading to Vipava’s farmers. He is the author of 'VINOREJA' (WINEGROWING) the first expert’s book on winegrowing to be written in the territory of Slovenia.
To Matija Vertovec the yearly MARCH ALONG VERTOVEC PATHS, which takes place on the first Sunday after St. Martin's Sunday, is dedicated.
