Šmarje Sap is the second largest town in the county. It is located 3 km from Grosuplje towards Ljubljana. Šmarje has been inhabited since Roman times and for more than 700 years had been the ecclesiastical, cultural and economic centre of a wide region of the North-western part of Dolenjska (from Ljubljana to Višnja Gora). The church of Mary's birth bears witness to these times. It is built in the style of a Roman basilica and is the oldest church in the county.
