This multimedia exhibition presents the urban development of Ljubljana over the last 2,000 years, from the Roman city of Emona to the present day.
The city's beginnings are closely connected with what is now referred to as ‘the castle hill', evidence of whose settlement can be traced back to the 12th century BC. In Roman times, the castle hill was the site of a defensive tower which allowed Roman soldiers to observe Emona's surrounding areas and warn the citizens about the arrival of enemies. The remains of Emona can still be seen in Ljubljana Castle's mighty walls as the 15th century Emperor Frederick III of Habsburg had them used as construction material for the building of the castle.
