Visas

If you need a visa to enter Slovenia, you can obtain one from the Slovenian consular mission in your country. If there is no Slovenian consular mission in your country, please contact a consular mission of any Member State of the Schengen Area.

All Schengen Area countries issue Schengen visas under the same conditions, taking into account the interests of the other Member States as well. A visa issued by one Schengen Member State is also valid for the other Member States.  In other words, this means that you can visit several countries which are in the Schengen Area.

Bringing in Items

Within the European Union countries, there is the free movement of goods, meaning that you can bring in Slovenia any kind of items for personal use.  The exceptions are tobacco products and alcoholic beverages, which are subject to restrictions. These are even stricter for those of you who live outside the European Union countries. For you, there is also a restriction regarding bringing in cash from outside the EU.

Restrictions on Tobacco Products and Alcohol

EU citizens can bring in Slovenia a maximum of 800 cigarettes or 200 cigars, or 1 kilogram of smoking tobacco. You can carry a maximum of 10 litres of spirits or drinks with an alcoholic content over 22 percent, or 20 litres of alcoholic beverages with less than 22 percent of alcohol.
Citizens of other countries, who are more than 17 years old, can bring in Slovenia a maximum of 200 cigarettes or 50 cigars, or 250 grams of smoking tobacco. You can carry a maximum of 1 litre of spirits or drinks with an alcoholic content over 22 percent, or 2 litres of alcoholic beverages with up to 22 percent of alcohol.

Bringing in Cashe

If you are a citizen of EU Member State, there are no restrictions on bringing cash into Slovenia, but if you are a citizen of another country you may bring a maximum of 10,000 euros in cash. Larger amounts must be declared to customs officials.

Travelling with Firearms

If you are a EU citizen and you are coming to Slovenia as a hunter and you want to use your firearm, you must only have a European Firearms Pass and a firearm certificate. You must have proper documents confirming that you are coming to Slovenia to hunt.

The citizens of other countries must, upon arrival, declare your firearm to the customs office, present a proper firearm certificate and documents indicating for what you intend to use the firearm in Slovenia.
Detailed information, which you need regarding the bringing of items into Slovenia, can be obtained on the website of the Slovenian Customs Administration, which is available in English.

Animals

If you want to bring your dog or cat to Slovenia, the regulations vary depending on whether you are coming from the European Union countries or from other countries. These countries also differ according to the their level of risk of contracting rabies. In all cases, your pets need a passport and veterinary certificate confirming that they were inoculated against rabies.

Refund of Value Added Tax

Due to the principle of a single European market, Slovenia has abolished the possibility of tax refunds on crossing the national border, since there are no such concessions among the European Union Member States.

For a VAT refund, the seller must provide the visitors from other countries with a special form, which is completed by the seller. As you exit the EU Member State, you must get the form certified by the customs authorities at the border crossing. At the same time, you must present the original receipt of purchase. You must take the purchased goods out of the country before the end of the third month from the date of purchase. The tax is refunded to you by the institutions indicated on the tax-free purchases form.

VAT refund can not be requested for mineral oils, alcohol and alcoholic beverages and tobacco products.
