Vrtovin is comprised of a series of small villages from the main road on the south to the higher and steep slope Kucelj. Numerous streams used to power the mills.
The territory belonging to Vrtovin, spreads in the direction north - south; the lowest area is the polje, with 120 metres above sea level, however, it reaches its highest point at the edge of the Trnovo Plateau (Trnovski planota) at 1250 metres. After only a distance of approximately seven kilometres the difference above sea level is 1130 metres.
The main village lies in the lower part of the area, between Malo and Veliko Brdo. Smaller settlements are scattered south and north of the village. South of the village are Grželi, Čebuli, Fužina, Guli and Stovška vas. However, on the north are Krti, Šateji, Subani, Jame, Kocjani, Rebki, Čermeli, Guštini, Fevči and Lozarji.
Points of distinction : The Baroque church in the middle of the settlement holds valuable fittings from different periods. Among them a unique stylistic achievement is the Late Gothic sculpture of the Virgin with the Child from the 15th century. Above the village under the 'Školj' (Reef) of St. Paul is a reservoir, built in the shape of a tower. The tower with a height of 11 metres is the oldest preserved piece of Roman architecture of such height in our territory.
