Veliki Podlog is located in the Krško Plain, which extends south of Krško to the Gorjanci Hills. The local administrative community of Veliki Podlog includes the villages of Veliki Podlog, Gržeča Vas, Mali Podlog, Jelše, Gorica and Pristava. The villages in the Krško Plain first appear in historical records as follows: Drnovo (Drenav) 1343; Velika Vas (Mcholdarf) 1436; Podlog (Veliki, Mali) (dacz Puedlag) 1330 – these two villages take their name from the fact that they stand in front of a log ("oak wood" i.e. Krakovo); Jelše (Erlach) 1444, so named because it stands among alders (jelše); Gorica (dacz dem Puhel in dem dorf) 1330, so named because of its geographical position, since it is the only hill on the Krško Plain (gorica means "little mountain").
