The name of Vanganel allegedly comes from the Italian word vanga (‘shovel’). It is located 6 km from Koper along the road towards Marezige.

The archaeological findings (coins and others) show that the area was populated in ancient times. One of the modern features of Vanganel is the artificial lake with the surrounding sports facilities, such as sports and tennis courts and riding facilities. Vanganel is also the starting point of the ‘Heart Trail’ (Pot za srce), a popular circular footpath to Marezige. At the time of cherry picking, you can also visit the traditional cherry festival.
