Sela pri Šumberku is a clustered village which is known by many for the romantic and somehow mysterious ruins of the Šumberk Castle. The village is located in the south-west part of Trebnje municipality and at the same time also represents the north-east area of the Suha krajina region. It is located quite high among the woody hills in the middle of an area of sinkholes, nestled into the foot of the peaks. On the lowest Šumberk peak lie the ruins of one of the oldest »real« castles in Kranjska. To the east, above the village Selce are the remains of the Kozjak Castle which had been levelled to the ground. Local tales speak of the origin of both castles, and it is from this that the writer Josip Jurčič derived material for his novel Jurij Kozjak.
