Nazarje is at the confluence of the Savinja and Dreta rivers in Zgornja Savinjska Dolina (the Upper Savinjska valley). It is an industrial centre with wood, household appliance and textile industries. The area of the municipality includes 15 settlements in the lower part of the Zadrečka valley, on the hillsides of Menina Planina (highlands), Čreta and Dobrovlje.
There is the Vrbovec castle in the midst of Nazarje that has been there for more than 750 years and has experienced ebbs and flows throughout history. Now it houses the seat of municipality, the wedding hall and an inn; and it also offers its premises to numerous companies. In September 2001 the Museum of Forestry and Timber – the only one of that kind in Slovenija - was opened in Vrbovec Castle.
On the hill above Nazarje there is a Franciscan monastery, where a school began operating at the end of 18th century. The library of the monastery is an exceptional treasure with its rare exhibits, among which is Dalmatin's Bible. There is a modern primary school which also house the Nazarje Music School, where students from all of Zgornja Savinjska Dolina learn. There is also a new sport hall that, in addition to the fun of sport, also offers possibilities for other different events because of it size and facilities. Besides raising horses, in Veniše there is a tourist centre with a variety of offers. Numerous footpaths around nearby Dobrovlje, Čreta and Menina, among which is also European footpath E6, complement tourist options.
