beside a river; in the countryside
Kokarje is a nucleated village by the river Dreta, in the lower part of the Dreta Valley, where it meets the slope of the Dobrovlje Plateau. The village is known in particular for its church, dedicated to the Virgin Mary, which first appeared in historical records in 1346. Kokarje once had its own unique local craft: black clay pots were made here using clay from the low watershed between the Dreta and the Savinja, known as Gorica ("Little Mountain").
