The first written evidence of the settlement dates back in the year 1200.
Since the late Middle Ages Šempas has preserved the status of a Parish. The oldest part of the village developed around the fortification called “Tabor” (Stari grad – the Old Castle) which was built to defend the local people against the Turkish attacks. The fortification was probably raised from a former feudal manor.
An old twisty road called the Napoleonic Road takes you up to the village of Vitovlje, across Krnica to the Trnovo Forest. The Čuk house (the today’s house number 161) is a perfect example of the architectural and cultural heritage of the place, together with the two mansions belonging to the Mainardi (Monardi) Family and to the Voccani nobles, as well as the Baroque St Silvestre church, the village centre Tabor and the Potočevo farm.
