The Jerac spruce tree is a special spruce, shaped by nature in a column, which makes it look very much like a cypress. It is 23 m tall, with a circumference of 91,5 cm and a diameter of almost 30 cm. The fact that a spruce with an extremely narrow and thickly grown crown is thriving at an altitude of only 700 m has not been explained yet. The main assumption suggests that the shape of the spruce is a consequnce of a mutation. Similar trees are namely typical for mountainous regions, where they had to adapt to extensive snowfall. Comparison between the Jerac spruce and a mountainous spruce reveals some other differences as well – Jerac spruce has a much thicker crown, while its branches are quite shorter and compressed almost to the stump.
Jerac spruce has been declared a dendrological monument by a decree of a Radece Commune.
