The lumpy village lies on the higher edge of the plateau. It is divided in
three areas: Peganski konec, Dolenjski konec and Britof and surrounded
with vineyards. The remains of an ancient fort are situated on a hill rising
above the village. A green onion-shaped belfry, adorning the 17th
century church of St. Nicholas, draws our attention as it is not typical for
the villages of this region. The church houses some stunning frescoes of
Tone Kralj from 1928: St Nicholas, the Annunciation, St Luke painting
the Madonna, St Luke – the doctor, John the Baptist, the Holy Family, the
Risen Christ and others. The works in Avber represent the peak of Kralj’s
religious painting.
