Wine varieties with long-lasting tradition are also the most popular wines in Slovenia. Wine-makers who wish to create or maintain their reputation must always have among their offer one of the traditional and local wine varieties; in this way, they can show their skills in various competitions. Primarily white wines prevail among these wines. Most popular is the laški rizling, produced in all three wine-growing regions. Malvazija has also been getting a lot of attention in recent years, produced in the wine-growing region of Primorska. Furthermore, rebula and šipon also deserve special mention. Among the red wine varieties, refošk is very important due to the fact that in the Karst region, with its special soil, it is used for the production of teran, a wine with numerous medicinal characteristics.
