The quest to best serve
guests’ needs and wishes has seen the rise of themed accommodation and other dedicated packages in Slovenia. Examples include accommodation for
hikers and bikers, accommodation for visitors to
natural health resorts and thermal spas, and typical regional holiday homes such as the zidanica in Dolenjska.

The development of old traditions…

The themed accommodation with the longest tradition in Slovenia is that at
natural health resorts and thermal spas. Guests have been having their health and wellbeing attended to at some of them for over a hundred years. Health resorts and spas offer not just therapeutic treatment, but also various forms of
wellness, sports and recreation, and culinary delights.
Natural health resorts and thermal spas have really flourished in recent years, as they expand and specialise their services. The majority boast modern, comfortable
hotels, while some have
apartments, bungalows and
campsites.
Another example of traditions being revived are the so-called
houses of tradition. These houses offer not just well-preserved architecture, but also a personal contact with the host and his/her family. Hosts will prepare a
traditional meal of the guest’s choosing, while explaining the history of the house and the local area.
… and the emergence of new traditions
A notable piece of Slovenian tradition, and part of the cultural heritage of the regions of Dolenjska and Bela Krajina, is the
zidanica. These small holiday homes surrounded by vineyards are a clear illustration of the Slovenian people’s connection with
winemaking. The zidanica has long been a space where people go to relax and have fun, but tourists were unable to enjoy this opportunity until recently. Now you can rent a zidanica, and see for yourself whether the cellar perhaps contains a good
cviček, a wine unique to Slovenia.
Given the popularity of
hiking and
biking in Slovenia, it is no surprise that in recent years many hotels, pensions and apartments have designed their services around these activities. Accommodation is given ratings of one to five hikers, and one to five bikers. Of course, the more hikers or bikers, the greater the comfort and range of services provided to guests.
