The principal river of the former is the Soča with its tributaries, while that of the latter is the Sava with its tributaries. The indigenous wildlife of both river basins differ one from another and each has its own characteristic representatives. As a speciality of the Adriatic basin it is essential to mention the Soča trout (Salmo marmoratus) and the Soča grayling (Thymallus thymallus adriaticus), whereas features of the rivers of the Danube basin are the Danubian salmon or huchen (Hucho hucho), a relative of the salmon and taimen, the brown trout (Salmo trutta fario) and the grayling (Thymallus thymallus).
