The Rižana is the only larger river of the Slovenian coast that flows directly into the Adriatic Sea. Its reaches are short, but rich. Although during summertime, due to drought and the extraction of water, the Rižana can barely be called a river, it offers wonderful experiences to fly fishermen. This is especially true in early spring when, while inland areas still sleep in winter, the coastal area is already in full bloom. During the day, trout, among which the brown trout is predominant, the ever-present hybrids and the more and more frequently found marble trout intensively hunt nymphs in the safety of the depths. In the evening, abundant swarms of insects lure them from the depths to fill their stomachs at a fully laden table.
