The black proteus or proteus anguinus is the subspecies of the proteus. It was discovered some 300 years after his white counterpart, in 1986, in the nearby source of Dobličica, and later also in the source Jelševnik. The source Jelševnik is the only place where the black proteus can be observed in its natural environment.
