This circular cultural hiking trail links the birthplaces of three great Slovenes. It begins in Velike Lašče and is about fifteen kilometers long. You can walk it at a moderate pace in three to four hours.
First, visit Retje, the birth village of the poet, storyteller, dramatist, and linguist Fran Levstik. Visit the Ilijev “kozolec,” a traditional Slovene hayrack in whose shade Levstik recorded the famous Slovene legend of Martin Krpan, the brave and clever salt smuggler. The Levstik farm no longer exists but the spot is marked with a memorial plaque and a bust of the writer. The trail continues past Podvala its a beautiful view of the Karavanke Mountains to Dvorska vas and the Church of Sv. Janez Krstnik. Admire its Baroque altar and wonderful organ. Across Mala Slevica and Velika Slevica, hike through the world of soft hills and valleys protecting the village of Podsmreka, the birthplace of the author, critic, and essayist Josip Stritar. The trail ends in Rašica, the birthplace of Primož Trubar, the “Father of the Slovene Language.” A traditional hike on this trail is organized by the Velike Lašče Mountaineering Association in June every year.
