This marked Kostel trail offers a short hike especially suitable for families and people of all ages. From the starting point in Žaga, the trail runs to Kostel Castle (12), the second largest castle complex in Slovenia, which is gradually being restored. First mentioned in 1336, it was originally owned by the Ortenburgs and later by the Counts of Celje and the Habsburgs. During the period of Turkish raids, it was an unconquerable stronghold for a long time, but in 1578 the Turks used a trick to gain entry and loot the castle. The trail leads down from the castle through a nascent primeval forest reserve to the green Kolpa River, and then along the river to the starting point. For those who love views and unspoiled nature, this is a pleasant three-kilometer walk, while its 200-meter change in altitude will leave joggers a bit winded upon reaching the top. The trail is marked with information signs, and a descriptive brochure is available.
