The central Gorenjska region is adorned by three wonderful medieval cities: Kamnik, the city in the lap of the mountains, Prešeren’s city of Kranj, and Škofja Loka, a genuine “gallery in nature.”
We will begin the excursion with a tour of Kamnik, a city where many renowned European aristocratic families lived and learn the legend of Countess Veronika and the jewel of Kamnik, Mali grad Castle.
The tour of the old city core of Kranj will conjure up a special atmosphere. You will see the Jože Plečnik’s beautiful arcades and fountain beside the Rosary Church, the City Hall with the permanent “Iron Thread” archeology exhibition, Khiselstein Castle, the Prešeren Theatre, and the parish Church of Sv. Kancian and his comrades. A tasty meal follows as we share impressions of the morning and our expectation for the afternoon.
Medieval Škofja Loka is the first genuine “gallery in nature” and at the same time the best-preserved medieval city in Slovenia. The tall facades of its imposing townhouses bear witness that the city never ceased to live. Škofja Loka has much to offer, even old rural architecture. The Nacetova House, which illustrates the life of the lower classes, is one of the best-preserved wooden farmhouses in Slovenia.
The conclusion of the day’s tour will be spiced up with an authentic medieval feast.
