The Rupnik Line (11) was named after General Leon Rupnik, who planned the construction of the Yugoslav defense system along the former border between the kingdoms of Yugoslavia and Italy. The defense line never served its purpose, but its imposing fortifications and bunkers still remain, and the trail is a real treat for history lovers and nature enthusiasts. You can “attack” the Rupnik Line in three stages: stage one runs from Žiri to Smrečje and further on across Žirovski vrh to Gorenja vas; stage two continues from there across Blegoš to Zali Log; and stage three further on across Ratitovec to Soriška planina, where it joins the Old Border Trail, the Italian section of the border fortifications. Be sure to get the guidebook with a detailed description of the trail, historical explanations, and tourist establishments along the way. Those who enjoy the surge of adrenaline can climb into the bunkers and descend into the underground tunnels and passageways of the largest fortifications. The romantics among you will enjoy hiking among the strongholds at night on the Moonlit guided tour.
