You can also choose to visit the Postojna cave, which is the most important tourist destination in Slovenia and one of the largest Karstic monuments in the world. This is an almost obligatory stop for all those visiting Slovenia, since it means a trip to a completely different world.
A fantastic web of tunnels, passages, galleries and halls, the astonishing diversity of Karst features as well as easy access are certainly the main reasons for such popularity of the cave and a large number of visitors, which has already reached 34 million in 200 years. Postojna Cave is world known attraction. It is also the greatest tourist attraction in Slovenia and one of the world`s largest karst monuments.
For 140 years, the Postojna Cave has been the only cave in the world to offer a unique and adventurous ride with a special train, which will take you into the cave, under spectacular underground arches, which are embellished with chandellier look-alike stalactites, through a beautiful subterranean world full of playful limestone sculptures.
We begin with an underground train ride as we travel the first few kilometres. Afterwards, we continue our walk through the caves, before later exiting again via the train. The interesting walking part of the tour takes around 1 hour and requires non-slip footwear. Don`t forget your jacket, as no matter what the outside temperature is, it is always about 8 degrees in the caves.
Also, meet the human fish! The unusual looks of the olm have always sparked people’s imagination. At first it was believed that they were just baby dragons brought to the surface by high tide. As a matter of fact, there might be some truth to these old beliefs…
