Leisure time activities, recreation, and tourism are increasingly intertwined with nature. The growing awareness of the importance of a healthy environment and the ever-greater need and demand for preserving nature and attractive landscapes is increasing the number of nature lovers in Europe.
Parks have become one of the most important locations that now form part of the tourism infrastructure (information centers, education and hiking trails, sports and recreation programs) and contribute to creating an “above standard” tourist offer. They offer peace, relaxation, the experience of unspoiled nature, and numerous activities linked with nature (photo-hunting, walking, mountaineering, etc.). True parks are places where the level of natural and cultural preservation is at its highest and are therefore becoming increasingly important for the “New Age” tourist.
Relative to its preserved nature, Slovenia has great unexploited potential. In a small area it offers an outstanding mosaic of biological, landscape, and cultural diversity, many natural assets, and a diverse cultural heritage. It is one of the countries in the European Union with the greatest level of biodiversity and currently has almost 11% of its territory protected in various protection categories. Slovenia has forty-four protected areas or parks, including one national park, three regional parks, and forty landscape parks.
Slovenia aspires to ethical or responsible tourism in its parks based on the experience and knowledge of nature, enabling the economic and social development of the local populations, and finding a balance between the needs of tourists and the preservation of nature. The basic starting point for such tourism is an offer for people who desire peace and relaxation and want to admire natural beauty, observe wildlife and other natural phenomena, enjoy diverse landscapes, learn about local culture, and discover the history of individual places and traditional life there through conversations with local people. The range of activities offered by Slovenia’s parks is extraordinarily diverse and extensive. We hope you will find great pleasure and new experiences in our parks.
