The Vipava Valley is open at the south-west end, and is strongly influenced by the Mediterranean Sea. The mild climate is often changed by the north-east wind ''burja'', which blows mightily from the top of the mountains. It blows, on average, at a speed of 80 km/h but can sometimes reach speeds up to 120 km/h. On the one hand, the strong north-east wind airs the valley, and on the other hand it shapes the lives and habits of the inhabitants. Settlements have generally grown in sheltered areas, roofs are covered with dippers and weighted by stones, the fronts of houses are turned towards the south and trees also bend in the same direction. The strong ''burja'' also helped to shape history with its fatal intervention between the armies of the Roman emperor Theodosius and his opponent Eugenius, on 5th and 6th September 394, in the battle at Frigid. Its help was crucial in ensuring Theodosius' soldiers victory.
