THE BUILDING THROUGH HISTORYThe buildings at the square Glavni trg 6 and 7 belong to the housing complex, which
had an important role in the constructive and cultural-educational history of Maribor.
They are standing in a place, where already in the 13th century
bourgeois homesappeared, which later turned into bourgeois houses. Today’s two-story building at
Glavni trg 7 got its own socially important role in the middle of 18th century, when the
Jesuits arrived in Maribor. The Jesuits purchased it together with other neighbouring
buildings in 1758 and 1759, and in them arranged their living quarters. Together with
the somewhat later
Aloysious church and today's building on the street Koroška ulica
1 were linked together for the next ten years in the so-called
Jesuit complex. After the disbandment of the Jesuits in 1773, the building was taken over by a study
fund, and was managed by a court chamber. First to settle in it was the
Terzi regiment,
which stayed there for ten years. The regiment was followed in 1784 by a mondure
commission, which stayed until 1809, and after that for nearly 50 years it was a military
cadet training college for the
Lusignan and Kinsky regiments. In 1859, after the
transfer of the diocesan seat from St Andraž to Maribor, a
theological seminary was organised in the building. And in 1886, after the Lavantine
diocese purchased another two-storey building with the same high street arch at Glavni
trg 6, it rounded off the complex between Mesarski prehod (Butcher’s Passage) and
Splavarski prehod (Rafter’s Passage). For that reason the seminary was then moved
into the former building of the Classical Grammar School at Koroška cesta 1. In the
emptied rooms they have arranged a theological seminary with lodgings for the
professors and theologians.
During the World War I the building was occupied by
the military – except for a small
part, in which theologians lived in. During the World War II
the occupator's police
force resided in the building. In the cellar of the house at Glavni trg 6 they arranged
cells for prisoners under investigation.
After the war both buildings were
nationalized, and also the purpose of the buildings
was changed. Some
tenants moved in, and different commercial enterprises organised
their
storehouses here. From 1960 to 1990 both buildings were adapted for the needs
of the Regional Archives Maribor.
