At the edge of Tivoli Park in Ljubljana is the representative Baroque building of the Cekin Castle that has been housing the National Museum of Contemporary History of Slovenia since 1951. The castle has had many interesting inhabitants through the years, including the Italian viceroy Eugen Beuharnais, the tutor of Slovenian poet France Prešeren, and the famous Kozler family of brewery fame. Today the castle houses the museum's permanent displays and temporary exhibitions.
The National Museum of Contemporary History is a state museum. It has preserved, studied and communicated material and non-material heritage from the fields of history and the Slovenian ethnic region since the beginning of the 20th century. It also has collections from the period of socialism and the formation of the new country. The collections are comprised of museum items, archives and library materials, works of art and photographs, which have been constantly supplemented.
