The first artefacts were unearthed in 1913/14 during work in the municipal gardens. Some of the finds can still be seen in the Polhov Gradec local museum.
Over the years the museum collection grew into a rich array of archaeological artefacts, which testify to the settlement of the area more than 2,000 years ago; some of the museum artefacts bare witness to the life of Polhov Gradec noblemen, some reveal facts about prominent local figures, such as Gregor Rihar, Jernej Trnovec. To show how our ancestors really lived, the collection also includes everyday items that were used at home, in farming, crafts and trade. Also on display is military equipment of different armies that tread our valley throughout history.
Great credit for setting up the local museum goes to history teacher Jožica Kavčič, who taught at the local primary school. Her history class compiled an extensive collection that eventually evolved into a museum, which is now housed in the Polhov Gradec Mansion.
