The Slovenian operatic classic The Nightingale of Gorenjska tells a story about a student named Franjo, who returns to his birthplace, an idyllic village in the mountainous region of Gorenjska, where he is eagerly awaited by his friend Lovro and his girlfriend Minka. Right at that time, a French singing teacher called Chansonette stops in the village. When he hears Minka sing, he immediately decides to take her away so that she could train her voice and make her living by singing. Even though Minka's family are being hassled by creditors to leave their house, Minka's mother refuses to accept money from Chansonette and the villagers decide to prevent the foreigner from fulfilling his plans …
