The nature reserve Mali Plac is situated on Kostanjevica (hill) near the village of Bevke. It contains the southernmost remnant of sphagnum high moor in Europe. For thousands of year, clay, organic mud and peat were deposited on its bottom. The basin of the lake is some 10 meters above the Barje plain and it was never connected to the greater regions of the Ljubljansko Barje. In Mali Plac there are many endangered plants (sundews (Drosera intermedia and D. rotundifolia), Oxycoccus palustris, Andromeda polifolia) and animals (moor tortoise, newts, dragonflies, several species of frog, rare marsh birds and birds of prey).
