Those Slovenian villages without a church will certainly have a shrine. Each shrine is dedicated to a specific saint. These shrines usually stand beside roads. But you can also find them in remote locations in the middle of forests. One fascinating chapel is the Russian chapel near Vršič pass, built in memory of the more than 300 Russian prisoners during the First World War who were buried in an avalanche while constructing the road. Shrines are also a constituent part of some churches, and in Slovenia they can even be found in certain secular buildings, such as in larger hospitals or public institutes.
