It is simple to travel around Slovenia by any means of transport. It is obviously easiest to use your own transport, but if you have none you can rely on public transport and thus help to protect the environment. In any case it is worth checking what should be done to make your travel around Slovenia as efficient as possible. The fastest way to travel around Slovenia by car is on the motorways, for which a
vignette is required. Do not drive on the motorway without the vignette, as this risks a heavy fine. Vignettes are available at all petrol stations.
Road safety
regulations require the use of
dipped lights at all times when driving, even during the day, while the maximum allowable
blood alcohol level is
0.5 parts per thousand. Breath tests are common, so it is perhaps better to avoid drinking and driving altogether.
There are 24-hour
service stations and petrol stations approximately every 30 km on the motorways. Petrol stations are also common in the cities and in smaller towns.

Cars can be hired from car rental agencies, provided that you are aged
at least 21 and have held a driving licence for at least two years. Some rental agencies impose a young drivers’ surcharge on drivers aged between 21 and 25.
The majority of towns and also rural areas can be reached by bus. When taking routes along local roads, the driver can drop you off at a bus stop in any village or town. Bus tickets can be bought from the driver, while tickets for a specific date can be bought at
major bus stations.
Slovenian Railways is the sole rail operator in Slovenia, and all its
timetables and price lists can be found on its website. Tickets can be bought at any railway station, or on the train. Trains in Slovenia generally run on time.
There is no point travelling by plane in Slovenia, as the distances are too small. However, there are scenic flights that are well worth taking.
In the summer several boats offer scenic cruises of Slovenia’s coastal waters. You can also hire a sailboat at several towns on the Slovenian coast.
Bikes can be ridden on all roads other than express roads and motorways. Bikes are also not allowed on forest trails or mountain trails.
