Kostel Castle is the second largest castle complex in Slovenia, and the village below it is still inhabited.
Kostel Castle was first documented in 1336. Although one of their main invasion routes led through Kostel, the Turks only captured the castle once in 1578 using trickery.
The French army demolished the castle in 1809, and restoration work only began a few years ago. Don’t miss the famous gallows site near the castle, and the natural features of Kurja glavica, the Hribska stena wall, and the Nežica Waterfall, whose strands of water reach all the way to the road during heavy rains are just a few kilometers away. The restored karst “kal,” an artificial watering pond, in the village of Ajbelj is an exceptional legacy of our ancestors.
