Out of twelve medieval manors in the area of the present Cerklje Municipality the Strmol Castle is the only one which has been preserved until today. According to its origins it belongs among the oldest castles in the area. If today we drive along the road that connects the villages of Češnjevek and Dvorje, we can see its magnificent image under the hillside of the Cerklje Forest. The castle was first mentioned in the 13th century although the data on its origin are not reliable. Until today the Castle has changed several owners, as the first ones the Strmol Lords were mentioned who were present in the history of Cerklje until the end of the 14th century. Below the castle used to be a pond with a drawbridge which served as a shield against the attacks of the Turks, however, today we can find a small artificial lake below it. The castle is well preserved and serves as a protocol building of the Republic of Slovenia.
