The ancient history of Gornja Radgona is inseparably connected to its castle.The history of the castle of Gornja Radgona and of its numerous landlords is quite interesting. In the 12th century the feudal land tenure of this region was in the possession of the Spanheim Counts. The interior of the castle was always very rich. Before W.W.II the castle was a middle - class school, a primary school and then an old people's home. The castle slowly dilapidated until 1992, when the businessman Milan Hercog rented it for 99 years and started reconstruction. However the castle is still awaiting its new role.
