The ancestors used stone to build up the village. They obtained stone from the quarries nearby or from the village slate quarry. Slate is a fine-grained, homogeneous, sedimentary rock composed of clay or volcanic ash which has been metamorphosed in layers (bedded deposits). Slate can be made into roofing slates (“skrle”), because it has two lines of breakability – cleavage and grain. This is how the village got the name Skrilje.
