Travelling with a tent in Slovenia is particularly popular among the young, but is also favoured by nature lovers of more mature years who value comfort, cleanliness and peace. These can be enjoyed at numerous campsites around the country, some with five-star ratings and facilities that could never be equalled by indoor accommodation at the same price. Camper vans and caravans are welcome at campsites, while some sites in Slovenia are designed specifically for them.

Comfort in the open air

Campsites in Slovenia can be found in the outskirts of towns, and in the green, invigorating countryside. Many are situated along rivers and lakes or by the sea, and are ideal for lovers of water sports and angling. There are also plenty of hiking and biking trails in their vicinity, while many campsites have children’s play areas and all manner of sports facilities: beach volleyball, crazy golf, basketball, 5-a-side football, badminton, table tennis and tennis. In short, campsites can offer great activity holidays, but are also attractive to those seeking peace and relaxation.

There are always picnic areas, but in some places the use of open fires is restricted. A good number of campsites boast shops and restaurants either on-site or nearby.

Camper vans and caravans are welcome at campsites. Some campsites can provide their own caravans or holiday cottages. Most campsites are open between late April and the end of October, but some are open all year round. The latter have heated bathroom facilities in addition to electricity.

Slovenia’s campsites are ideal for those who appreciate value-for-money holidays, but are capable of convincing even those who are looking for an open-air five-star hotel. Some Slovenian campsites deserve to be regarded among Europe’s finest, and can genuinely boast five stars. Most are rated between two and four stars.

New campsite ratings

All campsite operators were required to undergo a new rating process in 2009. All campsites with four or five stars were assessed by qualified inspectors, while those with lower ratings were assessed by the operators themselves in line with strict rules.

Mobile homes

For those travelling with camper vans Slovenia has several dedicated sites with all the requisite facilities. If you are travelling in a part of the country where there are no such sites, you are welcome to stop at campsites or larger rest areas along the main roads. In the countryside, some tourist farms have sites for camper vans.
