Spodnji Otok, 4240 Radovljica

On the fringes of the plain, beneath the wooded rolling hills that wend their way between the villages of Begunje and Podvin, the old Church of St John the Baptist stands atop a small hill. Its front façade will welcome you with exquisitely preserved wall paintings that date back to the fifteenth century.
The church, which is just a few minutes' walk from the village of
Spodnji Otok, is dedicated to St John the Baptist and was first mentioned in 1405. It is surrounded by walls that date back to the time of the Turkish invasions, an emerging menace between the end of the fifteenth and first half of the sixteenth centuries.

The legends of this period have been maintained here to this day, explaining why the church's clock strikes noon at 11.00 am. When the Turks approached the village and the church, they and their horses were attacked by hornets and put to flight. This happened at 11.00 am sharp, which is why the clock still strikes noon at 11.00 am every day. The same legend has it that one of the Turks' horses fled with such vigour that it struck the church gate with its hoof, making a hole in it which can still be seen today.
