There are thousands of churches in Slovenia. There are very few villages without a church, and there are also many remote hilltop churches. These are something of a special Slovenian feature, which those familiar with them link to pre-Christian cult sites and high-ground refuges of the earliest inhabitants. Many of Slovenia’s churches are listed as monuments of cultural heritage. The majority of the churches are Catholic, while especially in Prekmurje there are Protestant churches, and also synagogues in Maribor and Lendava. The churches date from various periods. You can find early Christian basilicas from Antiquity, pre-Romanesque chapels, Gothic and Renaissance, Baroque and neo-Romanesque churches, as well as excellent architecture from more recent times. The churches designed by architect Jože Plečnik merit special mention.
